In August of last year, what was dubbed the “money fight” took America by storm. A pay-per-view event, the fight took place between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor and is the highest grossing paid TV boxing event to date.
For those unfamiliar with the now legendary fight, it took place in Las Vegas and came about after months of suggestions from UFC mixed martial arts champion McGregor. Sports executives initially dismissed the idea, with UFC president Dana White declaring “Here’s what I think the chances are [of the fight happening]: About the same of me being the backup quarterback for Brady on Sunday.”
Well, stranger things have happened so by March 2017, both fighters were offered enough money to sign contracts and agree to a fight. This was a huge surprise for everyone since boxing great Mayweather had already retired by this point.
And while he did stand to gain beaucoup bucks from the fight, Mayweather still had his reputation to consider. He held an undefeated record at the time.
