Back in the early 90s, the two alternately exchanged diss tracks on their albums which many feel represents the tipping point of east vs west coast rap. The two have since moved on to tremendous financial success but any hip hop historian worth his salt remembers.
N.W.A vs. ICE CUBE
N.W.A. revolutionized the music industry back in the 80s with the iconic Straight Outta Compton. The album put west coast rap on the scene and was praised by critics for its masterful hooks and lyrics while it offended pearl clutching Reaganites everywhere, thereby proving its status as a masterpiece.
N.W.A. introduced America to the likes of Eazy-E and Dr. Dre as well as the aforementioned Ice Cube. Unfortunately, it seems Ice wasn’t being fairly compensated for royalties, he left the group to pursue his solo career, thereby starting beef.
N.W.A retaliated by taking shots at Ice Cube on their next album, but the now solo star wasn’t having it. His diss track “Vaseline” took them N.W.A. down a notch. Given its popularity and his overall success, looks like Ice Cube got the last word here.
